“Part of Your World”

P.S. I Still Love You

“Part of Your World” is heard during Lara Jean’s library confrontation with two girls watching the hot-tub video of her and Peter. Its abrupt emergence from their laptop speakers marks her shift from hesitation to direct action, and the video’s pairing of the song with scenes from The Little Mermaid gives the moment an uneasy counterpoint: an intimate image has been repackaged for other people to watch and share.

Appearance in the Library

Lara Jean notices two sophomore girls sharing earbuds and giggling over the video, which shows her in a nightgown draped across Peter’s lap. After hesitating over whether to confront them, she remembers Margot’s advice to rise above the incident, then decides to intervene. She snatches the earbuds from the laptop, and “Part of Your World” blasts through the speakers, abruptly making the private viewing audible in the library.

Role in the Confrontation

When one girl shuts the laptop after recognizing Lara Jean, Lara Jean tells her to play the video, opens the computer herself, and presses play. She sees that the video has been spliced with scenes from The Little Mermaid, followed by the lyric “When’s it my turn? Wouldn’t I love, love to explore that shore up above . . .” Lara Jean then shuts the computer and warns the girls that viewing and forwarding the video could expose them to charges because she and Peter are underage. The song’s appearance is therefore part of a larger reversal: the girls’ covert watching becomes a face-to-face encounter in which Lara Jean asserts the seriousness of what they are consuming and sharing.
